On November 10, 2001 I signed-up for Ironman Florida…  The event didn’t take place until November 9, 2002…  That is a full year in advance.  For people who are around the sport that doesn’t really sound odd because it is that way for every race in North America.  Last July I signed up for Ironman Lake Placid which takes place on July 23, 2006.  A full year in advance this race took less than one day to fill up all 1800+ spots.  I won’t even go into the challenge this can set forth for those who stress about the race for a full year; that is quite the build-up.  It’s now February and I have been calling around looking for a hotel to stay and I’m not having a lot of luck.  Yes, I’m booking a hotel a full 5 months in advance of a race, in a town that hosted the 1980 WINTER OLYMPICS and I am therefore a procrastinator.  A lot of things can happen during the course of a year with a little luck I’ll be able to hold the course as I have on two previous occasions and make it to the starting line healthy.  The fact is that many people don’t for various reasons but there will be hotel cancellations.  I’ll just have to work a little harder to snatch them when they come available!
